San Diego Unified School District Reveals Filtered Water Drinking Stations
On Tuesday April 26, 2022, the San Diego Unified School District, SDUSD, showed off their new “Hydration Stations” that they will be installing in all of their campuses moving forward. The “Hydration Stations” are a series of drinking fountains that have been completely filtered. They are not only going to be a station where students can stop to take a drink, but also a spot where students can fill up their water bottles. The stations will be found around the campuses, in teachers lounges and in the nurses offices. SDUSD is planning to install these in 24 different campuses at first.
In 2017 it was found that there was a high amount of lead in the drinking water found at certain schools in the district, which prompted them to act on making these new drinking fountains. While they continue to roll out these new fountains, they are retrofitting devices that filter out lead on the existing appliances. So far, the district has spent $2.2 million on this project. SDUSD has said they expect all of the “Hydration Stations” to be installed on all of their campuses by the end of 2024.
