How “Pure” is Purified Water?
You go to a store and pick out a bottle of water out of the nearest refrigerator. “Purified water” is written right on the front of the label. Easy enough choice; grab it and go about your day. What is purified water exactly? Most companies fill up these water bottles by putting tap water that is treated by a water filtration system known as reverse osmosis. Reverse osmosis will strip out everything in the water, all that is bad and all that is good. Minerals, like calcium and magnesium, are found naturally in all water and is good to have in your body but unfortunately the water that is treated with reverse osmosis is stripped of these naturally occurring important minerals. The companies then add another sentence to these bottles of water: “with minerals added for taste”.
The World Health Organization has a study that shows that demineralized water is not good for one’s health. Reverse osmosis does exactly that; they demineralize the water. Therefore, these
companies add minerals back into the water. Sometimes that isn’t enough. The pH balance of all these reverse osmosis waters tends to find itself underneath a 7, or acidic. Anything above a 7 on the pH scale is considered alkaline. Other recent studies show that it is better to have alkaline water than it is to have acidic water. Before the water is “purified”, tap water is naturally alkaline.
